چکیده

Samples were collected adjacent to the Island of Porquerolles in the Northwest Mediterranean Sea to study the distribution of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in heavily oxygen-depleted sediments associated with the decomposition of organic carbon derived from the sea grass Posidonia oceanica. Elevated isotopic concentrations of uranium ( U and U up to 200 Bq/kg d.w.) were likely due to the high organic carbon and very low oxygen content of the sediment.

Heavy metals in coastal sediments of South Caspian Sea: natural or anthropogenic source?

This paper focuses on heavy metal distribution patterns in sediments of central Guilan (CG) and east Mazandaran (EM) in the south Caspian Sea coasts, north of Iran. Sediment sub-samples were retrieved from core and surficial samples in different environments of marine and coastal lagoons as well as coastal outcrops. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectrometry (...

Mapping Spatial Patterns of Posidonia oceanica Meadows by Means of Daedalus ATM Airborne Sensor in the Coastal Area of Civitavecchia (Central Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

The spatial distribution of sea bed covers and seagrass in coastal waters is of key importance in monitoring and managing Mediterranean shallow water environments often subject to both increasing anthropogenic impacts and climate change effects. In this context we present a methodology for effective monitoring and mapping of Posidonia oceanica (PO) meadows in turbid waters using remote sensing ...

Tracing sewage and natural freshwater input in a northwest Mediterranean Bay: evidence obtained from isotopic ratios in marine organisms.

Elemental carbon and nitrogen levels and isotope ratios were assessed in different biological compartments of a Northwest (NW) Mediterranean bay to trace the various sources of nutrient input from natural (river runoffs) and anthropogenic (harbor outflows, fish farms and urban sewage outfall) sources. Samples from transplanted mussels and natural sea grass communities (Posidonia oceanica leaves...

Sedimentary facies and foraminiferal assemblages from [i]Posidonia oceanica[i] meadows of western Mediterranean Sea

Sedimentary facies and foraminiferal assemblages of sediments sampled into seven Posidonia oceanica meadows from Western Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Six sampling sites are localised in Italy (Maratea, Ponza Island, Santa Marinella, Giglio Island, Osalla and Alghero), and one in France (Argentella, Crovani Bay, Corsica). The role of P. oceanica meadows in the sedimentary processes was i...

Millennial scale impact on the marine biogeochemical cycle of mercury from early mining on the Iberian Peninsula

[1] The high-resolution mercury record of a Posidonia oceanica mat in the northwest Mediterranean provides an unprecedented testimony of changes in environmental mercury (Hg) loading to the coastal marine environment over the past 4315 yr BP. The period reconstructed made it possible to establish tentative preanthropogenic background Hg levels for the area (6.8 1.5 ng g in bulk sediments). A sm...
